Akyaka is part of Ula, a district of Muğla. Located at the eastern end of Hökova Bay, it offers a special tourist charm. Inhabited since ancient times, Akyaka was a remote, small fishing village in the past. Only in the 1970s it was discovered as a resort and the first tourist activities began. Akyaka is known for its mild climate, which provides a pleasant breeze even in summer due to cool wells from the surrounding mountains. The first summer houses were built for guests from the surrounding provinces and cities who wanted to enjoy this untouched nature. The travel boom of the 1980s then gave Akyaka the touristy look it has today.
One of Akyaka’s most popular beaches is Çinar Beach, about 3km away from Hamitköy. It is located on Ören Street and is easily accessible via a paved driveway along the coast. If you follow the beach road from Çinar, you will get to Akbuk Bay and the neighboring town Ören (Gereme, Keramos). Another place to visit is the water source known as the Women’s River, famous for its natural beauty. Those who like to be more active can use the leisure activities in Akyaka for water sports, surfing and canoeing, marvel at the region while paragliding in nearby Sakartepe or explore the area by mountain bike. Regular trips to the nearby Azmak River and further afield to Sedir Island invite you to explore the area by sea and perhaps meet the lutra lutra otter, the Female River’s famous guest.
Akyaka is also known for its architectural features. The combination of the old buildings of Ula with today’s modern architecture form a synthesis that is unique in Turkey. Typical wooden elements, old chimneys and two-storey flower gardens form a symbiosis that harmonises perfectly with the natural beauty of the surroundings.
